Laurent Cugny : To Gil Evans and beyond...

lundi 6 février 2017

Next year will mark the 30th anniversary of the passing of a legend, the exceptional pianist and composer behind jazz classics like "Sketches of Spain" or "Birth of the Cool" : Gil Evans.

After dedicating himself to research and teaching, Laurent Cugny, former director of the ONJ (French National Jazz Orchestra, 1994-1997) comes back to the big band formula with the Gil Evans Paris Workshop. Thirty years after their collaboration on a 20 concerts tour in Europe back in 1987 and the recording of two discs (« Rhythm A Ning » and « Golden Hair »), he revives the famous Miles Davis arranger’s spirit.

Drawing on Evan’s various periods, Laurent Cugny celebrates the master’s legacy by revisiting his best known and more unrecognized scores, but also by elaborating a completely original repertoire reflecting the writing principles of his mentor. As always, Laurent Cugny have selected the best and most promising musicians for his big band. Although they are all from the 80’s, they bring life to Evans heritage with talent and inventiveness.

The Gil Evans Paris Workshop ended 2016 with a participation to the EFG London Jazz Festival and the Madrid International Jazz Festival. 2017 will see the release of « Spoonful », the orchestra’s debut album, recorded live from the New Morning in Paris, on Friday April 7th.
